AgriVilla

Home gardeners: the stewards of community nutrition

AgriVilla is a North Shore community initiative to re-distribute surplus fruits and vegetables from home gardens to individuals facing food insecurity. Many home gardeners produce more fruits and vegetables than their own households can consume, and are therefore left with a surplus of fresh, organic produce. Meanwhile, members of the same community are facing food insecurity, and in particular a lack of access to fresh and nutritional produce. AgriVilla seeks to disrupt traditional capitalistic perspectives of agriculture by building a community-based platform for food resource sharing.

FAQs

Are individuals, meal centres other community non-profits required to purchase the produce?

No. As part of our commitment to disrupting food insecurity we provide all produce at no cost through our online platform. GCFS will cover all costs related to transportation, delivery and quality assurance.

Is produce grown in backyard gardens safe for human consumption?

Absolutely! Our gardens are free of pesticides and other chemicals. We also inspect fruits and vegetables for impairments prior to delivery. However, we still recommend that you wash all produce prior to consumption.

I just have a small herb garden on my balcony. Am I still eligible to contribute to the program?

Yes! We encourage gardeners with any size of garden to sign up as a vendor and provide home grown produce.

I’m an individual or a non-profit organization in need of fresh fruits and vegetables. Do I have to prove that I am eligible to receive produce through AgriVilla?

No. As part of our commitment to trust-based philanthropy, we will never collect any information to assess eligibility. We only ask that all produce is going to those in need.
